Hippopotamus

A fayence sculpture, from the New Kingdom of Egypt, 18th/19th dynasty, c. 1500-1300 BC, when hippos were still widespread along the Nile. As indicated by the name, ancient Greeks considered the hippopotamus to be related to the horse. Until 1985, naturalists grouped hippos with pigs, based on molar patterns. Evidence, first from blood proteins, then from molecular systematics[8] and DNA [9] and the fossil record, show that their closest living relatives are cetaceans—whales, porpoises and the like.[10][11] Hippopotamuses have more in common with whales than they do with other Artiodactyls (even-toed ungulates), such as pigs, because the common ancestor of hippos and whales branched-off from ruminants and the rest of the even-toed ungulates. Thus, hippos are more closely related to whales than to other members of Artiodactyla. While cetaceans and hippos are each other's closest living relatives, their lineages split soon after their divergence from the rest of the even-toed ungulates.[12][9]
The hippopotamus does not sweat, and when out of the water for a while, their skin sometimes oozes a pinkish, oily liquid. Some people think this is blood but it is not. This liquid prevents the skin from drying out and acts as a sunscreen. Hippos have a thin skin that easily dries out. Under the skin they have a thick layer of fat, which helps keep them warm in the water. Eyes, ears and nostrils are on the top part of the head so that they can float in the water and see, hear and breathe easily.

A submerged Hippopotamus As indicated by the name, ancient Greeks considered the hippopotamus to be related to the horse. Until 1985, naturalists grouped hippos with pigs, based on molar patterns. However evidence, first from blood proteins, then from molecular systematics, and more recently from the fossil record, show that their closest living relatives are cetaceans – whales, porpoises and the like [1]. This is somewhat misleading... as both cetaceans and hippopotami are early offshoots of artiodactyl evolution, and despite being each other's closest living relatives, the whale and hippo lineages split very soon
Many years ago the hippopotamus, whose name was Isantim, was one of the biggest kings on the land; he was second only to the elephant. The hippo had seven large fat wives, of whom he was very fond. Now and then he used to give a big feast to the people, but a curious thing was that, although everyone knew the hippo, no one, except his seven wives, knew his name.
