The Hippopotamus is a large mammal from swampy areas, lakes, and rivers in Africa. Hippopotamus means "River Horse" in Greek. The genus and species of the hippo are Hippopotamus amphibius. Hippos have a life span of 40 years.
The common brown or gray hippopotamus, Hippopotamus amphibius, once widely distributed throughout Africa and now found south of lat 17° N, is one of the largest four-footed animals. It reaches a length of 4 m (14 ft) and weighs more than 3.6 metric tons; because of its short legs it stands no higher than 1.5 m (5 ft) at the shoulder. Its stomach is more than 3 m (more than 10 ft) long.

The heaviest land mammal after the elephants, the Hippopotamus feeds by plucking grass with its wide muscular lips. Hippos spend much time underwater, coming ashore to feed at night. They spend the day digesting and socializing in the water. Hippos form dense groups, especially during the dry season when waters recede. Herd members often lie in contact with one another. Males compete for females and their tusks can inflict terrible wounds.

The Malagasy Hippopotamus was first described in the mid-1800s by Alfred Grandidier, who unearthed nearly 50 individual hippos from a dried-up swamp near Lake Ranobe, a few miles from the Mozambique Channel. As many as four different species of hippopotamus were subsequently identified by various researchers. In a careful revision of the fossil record of the Malagasy Hippos, Stuenes concluded that there were only two species of hippopotamus which she classified as Hippopotamus lemerlei and Hippopotamus madagascariensis.[9][1] In 1990, Faure and Guerin discovered a distinct third species of hippo, which they named Hippopotamus laloumena. In a review of Stuenes work, Harris suggested that Hip. madagascariensis had much in common with the extant pygmy hippopotamus of West Africa.[3] Since the extant pygmy hippopotamus was placed in the genus Hexaprotodon, he used the name Hex. madagascariensis.
The Hippopotamus was named by the Greeks and the word means "river horse". However, this animal has no connection to horses. Some researchers are say that the hippo could be related to whales or even pigs.
