Hippies: Festivals
built 263 days ago
With the demise of the Grateful Dead and Phish, nomadic touring hippies attend a growing series of summer festivals, the largest of which is called the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, which premiered in 2002. The Oregon Country Fair is a three-day festival featuring hand-made crafts, educational displays and costumed entertainment. The annual Starwood Festival, founded in 1981, is a six-day event indicative of the spiritual quest of hippies through an exploration of non-mainstream religions and world-views, and has offered performances and classes by a variety of hippy and counter-culture icons.

In this comic tale, a quintet of contemporary hippies takes to the road in their Volkswagen bus -- dubbed "Kosmic Freedum"-- to attend Preservation Week, an event dedicated to saving the planet. But when they can't get into the festival, they find themselves on their own -- and facing off against loggers, sport utility vehicle owners and, of course, the fuzz. Matt Keating, Amy Renner, Kurt Richter, Kevin George and Michael Roberts star.

Just as Bohemians used art and writing, hippies used their distinct music to rebel against authority and define a whole generation. At Woodstock, a major music festival during the summer of 1969, hippies celebrated the ideas of their generation through music.
