Hinges: Doors
built 640 days ago
Summary: Door hinges are not all the same. Some old homes have hinges that are ornate, and have square corners. Many modern door hinges are unattractive. You can replace modern ugly door hinges with gorgeous hinges that are solid brass, look old and have decorative tips.

Door hinges come in many guises... still by far the most common are butt hinges and tee hinges. Butt hinges fit between the door and the frame and the knuckle or pivot point of the hinge is visible on the outside of the door. Tee hinges are entirely on the surface of the door and frame and exposed to view.

These lovely hinges are designed for the vintage doors of the pre-1930's era. One side of a half mortise hinge fits in a groove in the door frame (... called a mortise) while the other side of the hinge attaches to the door face. This application was commonly used with thin doors, and is an elegant way of displaying otherwise hidden ornate hardware.

[D]etermine where the hinges are to be located. For example, a door hinge is usually 5" from the top and 10" from the bottom of a door. If you are replacing a door, place the hinges so you can use the recesses already on the frame, if possible. Or use the same measurements as found on any other nearby doors.

The most accurate way to create the straight lines that will square up the existing hinge mortises is to temporarily screw one of the new hinges right on top of the existing mortised area for your current door hinges. The new hinge will lay up on top of the wood at each of the rounded-corner locations, but that is not a problem.

The projection and parliament hinges are used when the door opens very wide (approximately 180 degrees) and clears a projection. The screw holes on these hinges are placed towards the edge of the hinge flap and they help to increase the angle of the opening. The tee hinge, band and gudgeon hinges are lightweight and weather-resistant types that are generally used on garden gates, wooden entrance gates and garage doors.
