Perhaps more surprising than Hilary Lunke's remarkable win at the Pumpkin Ridge is that she does not consider it remarkable at all. After all, it's what you dream of when you start early in the game.

This Thursday marks the opening of the 2006 Women’s U.S. Open, and to Johnny’s point, I’m guessing Hilary Lunke has no shot. And have you noticed that for all the press Michelle Wie, Morgan Pressel, and Paula Creamer have been getting that the two winners of the Majors this season have been a couple of oldies but goodies, Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak. How about Juli Inkster for the win this week?

In 2003, the U.S. Women’s Open returned to Pumpkin Ridge. In a stunning and epic ending, Hilary Lunke staved off a sudden-death playoff after rolling in a 15-footer for birdie on the 18th hole to win the 58th U.S. Women’s Open. Lunke outlasted Angela Stanford and Kelly Robbins for her first win, a major no less, as a professional. She carded a 1-under 70 and 2-under total 353.

When Hilary Lunke arrived at the Pumpkin Ridge's Witch Hollow course on Monday, she came with nothing new on her mind. Again, her husband Tylar would be on her bag. And again, they would try "to keep things light and joke around." It was part of a formula that had worked all weekend, according to Hilary.

Lunke had to qualify for the U.S. Open -- twice. Local and sectional qualifying. It did not look like Lunke was going to Portland after she shot an 80 in the first round at the sectionals, but she came back to post a 73 in the afternoon and qualified by one stroke.

Lunke became the first player to win the trophy by qualifying for the event. Even that looked to be in jeopardy when she opened with an 80 in the opening round of sectional qualifying, but now, at 24, she is the youngest American to win a major title in the last 16 years.
