Hilary Lunke: Us Women
built 360 days ago
Lunke was the winner in the best finish golf had seen in years. Too bad nobody saw it. The three-way playoff for the Open title with Lunke, Angela Stanford and Kelly Robbins was played on a Monday, because the USGA believes that an 18-hole playoff is necessary to identify a national champion. Moreover, it was not made clear on Sunday that the playoff would be televised on ESPN, not NBC.

[T]he US Open title ... opened doors and provided some security for Lunke and husband and caddie, Tylar, who married 11 months before the Open. The newlyweds put her $560,000 winner’s paycheck to good use. Weary of paying rent, they bought a home a week before the Open even though they knew that making the mortgage was going to be a stretch each month.

Amazingly, on July 7, 2003, Lunke became the 2003 US Open winner. She won over $500,000, which was over $225,000 more than the 2nd place finisher, whom she beat by one stroke.

If the U.S. Golf Association wanted a poster girl, they got it in Lunke. You want a player who typifies the Open ideal? How about someone who drives the ball 210 yards, carries five woods in her bag, uses her husband as caddie, and weeps openly after making the Open her first win.

"We immediately said when we came out how great it would have been to have someone to ask questions," Lunke said. "We were really lucky we knew a player or two who befriended us. But there are players that come out here and don't know anybody, and they're really intimidated.

"I always thought if I was going to win, it would be a US Open," Lunke said. "I tend to hit it pretty straight, and I have a great short game. And that's what you need at the US Open.
