"There is a strong correlation between student achievement and a personal connection to school. Research shows that students who have supportive learning environments with strong personal relationships have greater success in school, at work, and in the community. All school stakeholders have a shared responsibility to provide all students with the opportunities, guidance, and resources they need to become productive citizens in a global society and its future leaders."

High schools can usually be sub-classed as general high schools, vocational high schools (VoTech schools), and college preparatory high schools (prep schools) and Alternative high schools. Most high schools are general high schools. These schools offer a wide range of educational opportunities intended for the widest range of students possible. These general population schools offer college preparatory classes for advanced students, general education classes for average students and remedial courses for those who are struggling. Students can "mix and match" course levels according to their own abilities or interests.

The event featured the top 92 scorers of the 6,200-plus students who participated at the qualifying level from local area schools including A.A. Benjamin Health Professions, Bella Vista, Cesar Chavez, Choice Charter, CK McClatchy, Del Campo, Elk Grove, Folsom, Franklin, Galt, Grant Union, Hiram W. Johnson, Inderkum, Jim Elliot Christian, John F. Kennedy, Keema, Laguna Creek, Monterey Trail, Natomos Pacific Pathways Prep, Pleasant Grove, Rio Linda, Rosemont, Tokay, Victory Christian, Vista Nueva and West Campus.

That first school still exists today as English High in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, its seventh location in 184 years, and its evolution echoes dramatic social changes in thousands of schools around the country. The initial graduates were all white males who studied literature, science, math and history. It's now coed, and this year's 249 seniors are mostly black and Hispanic with ancestors from 30 countries. To meet their needs, the school houses a day-care center for teen parents, a Gay-Straight Alliance, a program to help kids find summer jobs and a social club for the large numbers of students from Somalia--among dozens of other activities.

Educational option schools and programs within large high schools offer some of the most attractive alternatives for kids - as well as some of the most perplexing and aggravating admissions procedures. These schools were designed to ensure that low-performing kids as well as academic stars had an equal shot at admission. To that end, a certain proportion of seats are reserved for high-achievers (16%), for average kids (68%), and for the lowest-achievers (16%). The school administration chooses half the students; half are assigned at random by Department of Education computers. Kids who score in the top two percent on the 7th grade reading exam are guaranteed a slot in an "ed-op" school if they list it as their first choice on their high school application.
