A group of nearly 50 ninth-graders from PPHS and New Berlin High School are participating in the program’s first year at Pleasant Plains. PPHS technology teacher Erik Rich, who received special training from Project Lead the Way, teaches the classes at the district’s south campus.

One of Miami's magnet schools, Design & Architecture Senior High (DASH), took home six of the top eight awards. Another magnet school, the New World School of the Arts, was ... represented among the winners. His goal is to integrate the program into middle schools next year and eventually into high schools. Sequoia Middle School is already using SPARK equipment in its after-school program. SPARK expanded last year to include seven afterschool programs and three preschools in Redding.

Public high schools in designated "AARP Celebration Cities" will be eligible to compete for $100,000 prizes in recognition of programs that connect generations or foster greater civic engagement among students and their communities. The celebration cities, which will be the focal point of AARP's 50th anniversary activities, include Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, and Washington, DC.

Teams of students and teachers from 18 high schools across the country were awarded InvenTeams grants of up to $10,000 each by the Lemelson-MIT Program to invent prototype devices that address problems they have identified. In June 2006, delegates from each InvenTeam will present their inventions during the InvenTeams Odyssey, a culminating event at MIT.

The boys soccer teams playing yesterday at San Ysidro High had vastly different agendas. Sweetwater was trying to clinch its first outright Mesa League title in more than a decade. San Ysidro was hoping to restore credibility to a program that has taken a significant hit over the past seven days following its much-publicized brawl with Otay Ranch.
