Today, Hezbollah is an active participant in the political life and processes of Lebanon, and its scope of operation is far beyond its initial militant one. In 1992, it participated in elections for the first time, winning 12 out of 128 seats in parliament. It won 10 seats in 1996, and now holds 8. Since the end of the Israeli occupation of Lebanon on May 24 2001, the Hezbollah has been involved in activities like building schools, clinics, hospitals and other needed services for their society.

Hezbollah has in the past demonstrated its ability to target Jewish institutions far from the Middle East. In 1992 it car bombed the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29, and two years later it again hit the Argentine capital, killing 85 at the AMIA Jewish community center; Mugniyeh was considered a suspect in both attacks. Hezbollah has ... carried out deadly attacks against Americans, but they have all been outside the United States, and the terrorist group has reportedly shown little to no activity in America.

Although Hezbollah has denounced certain attacks on Western civilians, some people accuse the organization of the bombing of an Argentine synagogue in 1994. Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman, Marcelo Martinez Burgos, and their "staff of some 45 people"[128] alleged that Hezbollah and their contacts in Iran were responsible for the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center in Argentina, in which "[e]ighty-five people were killed and more than 200 others injured."[129] In June 2002, shortly after the Israeli government launched Operation Defensive Shield, Nasrallah gave a speech in which he defended and praised suicide bombings of Israeli targets by members of Palestinian groups for "creating a deterrence and equalizing fear." Nasrallah stated that "in occupied Palestine, there is no difference between a soldier and a civilian, for they are all invaders, occupiers and usurpers of the land."[8]

[I]n July 2006, Hezbollah staged a cross-border raid into Israel, killing eight Israeli soldiers and capturing two. The raid came after a similar cross-border incident in which Hamas guerrillas from the Gaza Strip took an Israeli soldier prisoner. Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert declared the Hezbollah raid an “act of war,” and Israel began a heavy aerial bombardment of southern Lebanon and Beirut, targeting the homes and offices of Nasrallah and other Hezbollah leaders. Hezbollah responded with rocket attacks on civilian areas of Israel. Many observers believed that the punishing Israeli air campaign, which destroyed much of Lebanon’s infrastructure and killed thousands of civilians, would isolate Hezbollah from other Lebanese. But the heavy civilian toll and seemingly indiscriminate air attacks appeared to have the opposite effect.

[O]f this background Hezbollah went through various decisive moments in its history. With the most important moment being in 1982 the year of the Zionist invasion of Lebanon. This invasion led to the occupation of the capital Beirut making it the second Arab capital to be occupied during the Arab-“Israeli” conflict, with Jerusalem being the first. This crossroad speeded up the presence of Hezbollah as a struggle movement that is totally affiliated in the long complicated and complex fight against the Zionist enemy. The starting point of that struggle being the Zionist occupation of Palestine, and then to many of the Arab lands in Egypt, Syria and Jordan leading up to Lebanon. All that led to the establishment of the identity of Hezbollah as a struggle movement against the Zionists.
