The storyline of Hexen II: Portal of Prevus continues where Hexen II leaves off: after the destruction of Eidolon a misterious winter comes to Thyrion freezing most continents. After some time rumours of wild magic being weilded by an unknown sorcerer begin to surface. Apparently this vile person is attempting to collect the souls of the three vanquished Serpent Riders: D'Sparil (Heretic), Korax (Hexen) and Eidolon (Hexen II) to do his bidding ... rising as the ultimate power in the universe. As the four heros you must, again, save Thyrion and as the new character, the Demoness, your task to to avenge your master, Eidolon itself, and getting his soul back from the sorcerer to it may rest in peace.

Hexen II transports players into four worlds - a medieval town and castle, a Roman villa, Egyptian Pyramids and Meso-American ruins. One of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse lies in wait at the conclusion of each world. Gamers must choose to battle as one of four classes in single-player mode, or fight against all four classes in multi-player deathmatches.

Hexen II runs in one of two modes: Software or OpenGL rendering. Rendition is bringing out beta drivers of their OpenGL Verite implementation. 3DFX was the first chip technology to make drivers for it and many more are writing their own too. Although Quake didn't have native support for OpenGL, 3DFX wrote a OpenGL mini-driver for Quake. (both VQuake and GLQuake are available as a free download from several websites) but Hexen II uses a much wider and expandable format: OpenGL and the term "GLHexen" now refers to hardware rendering through OpenGL drivers.

The Creative Labs FTP site ... has new Windows NT 4.0 drivers for the 3D Blaster Banshee as well as a new OpenGL minidriver for the Banshee running under Windows NT or Windows 95/98 for Quake, Quake II and Hexen II. Thanks Billy at Voodoo Extreme.

An expansion pack called Hexen II: Portal of Praevus was released in 1998 featuring new levels, new enemies and a new playable character class, The Demoness. It focuses on the attempted resurrection of the three Serpent Riders by the evil wizard Praevus, and takes place in a fifth continent, Tulku, featuring a Sino-Tibetan setting.
Hexen II has a scoring system for your experience. When you kill enemies (other than sheep), you gain experience points. Press and hold the TAB key to check them. At certain thresholds, you gain experience levels. A higher experience level gives you a higher health maximum and mana maximum. Therefore, don't leave any monster alive.
