The IgM Antibodies Screen is a non-type specific Herpes test and therefore does not distinguish between the two Herpes types and may show cross-reactivity with other types of Herpes viruses like Mono and CMV, two common Herpes viruses. The turnaround time for this test is typically 4-6 business days.

The IGG test is the standard herpes test that will not only detect the presence of the virus, but ... determine which type of infection is present. This test is used if there has not been any sexual contact in the last 6 weeks.

Several years ago, the effect of L-Lysine against the herpes virus was noted in the test tube. Medical journals report that changing the nutritional environment of herpes alters its capability to make essential proteins. This amino acid balance can be critical especially between two amino acids, lysine and arginine when treating the herpes virus. These two amino acids work in somewhat opposite ways, in that lysine, in excessive amounts damages the herpes virus, while arginine in insufficient amounts has a similar effect against the herpes virus.

Often about 20% of culture tests produce a "false negative" when a patient has a first episode of herpes. With recurrent episodes, when less virus is present, the rate of false negatives goes up to 50%.

Although Echinacea (coneflower) has gained some popularity for the prevention of herpes, there is no scientific evidence that it works for this purpose. In fact, despite test tube studies suggesting that Echinacea has the ability to fight the herpes virus, one study of people with herpes did not show any reduction in the number of their outbreaks.
