Herpes: Hsv-2

Today, most whitlow is caused by HSV-2 in sexually active adults, almost always the result of hand contact with lesions during a first episode of genital herpes, prior to the development of a full immune response. Though the risk of herpetic whitlow is small in those with recurrent genital herpes, it’s a good idea to avoid touching HSV lesions. If you do make contact, it’s best to wash your hands right away. Soap and water will kill the virus and avert the risk of

According to the American Social Health Association (ASHA), about 25% of all adults in the US carry the virus for genital herpes (HSV-2). Unfortunately, up to 90% of those who have the HSV2 virus DON'T EVEN KNOW IT. This is because most people with herpes have mild, infrequent, or even NO symptoms. Also, most doctors do NOT include a test for herpes when they are testing you for other STDs unless you specifically request it. And even when you ask them to test you for herpes, some doctors will tell you that unless you are having an active outbreak, there are no reliable tests for herpes available. These doctors are woefully out-of-date.
More evidence was presented this week by researchers from London regarding the strong link between infection with herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) and the transmission of HIV, this time from an epidemiological perspective. The results of a cross-sectional study of 1000 married heterosexual couples in four cities in sub-Saharan Africa, published in the latest issue of the journal AIDS, suggest that HSV-2 is the key risk factor in promoting HIV transmission.
Although not all studies agree, one 6-month study of 93 people with HSV-2 (which, again, generally causes genital herpes lesions) found that Siberian ginseng reduced the frequency, severity, and duration of outbreaks. This herb should not be given to children and should not be taken if you have high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea (repeated, prolonged periods when breathing stops while sleeping), narcolepsy (frequent day time sleeping), are pregnant or breastfeeding.

There are indications that a carrageenan based gel may offer some protection against HSV-2 transmission by binding to the receptors on the herpes virus ... preventing the virus from binding to cells. Researchers have shown that a carrageenan-based gel effectively prevented HSV-2 infection at a rate of 85% in a mouse model.[44] There is an ongoing large-scale trial of the efficacy of a similar formulation on humans results are expected to be published in 2007.
