herpes-hist.jpg (495891 bytes) Herpes viruses are a leading cause of human viral disease, second only to influenza and cold viruses. They are capable of causing overt disease or remaining silent for many years only to be reactivated, for example as shingles. The name herpes comes from the Latin herpes which, in turn, comes from the Greek word herpein which means to creep. This reflects the creeping or spreading nature of the skin lesions caused by many herpes virus types.
Herpes is a lifelong disease that can be transmitted to others, even in the absence of lesions. Therefore, you should abstain from sexual activity while lesions are present (when the disease is most infectious), and use condoms at all other times.

herpes simplex.jpg (32705 bytes) Herpes simplex 1 and 2 are frequently benign but can ... cause severe disease. In each case, the initial lesion looks the same. A clear vesicle containing infectious virus with a base of red (erythomatous) lesion at the base of the vesicle. This if often referred to as a 'dewdrop on a rose petal'. From this pus-containing (pustular), encrusted lesions and ulcers may develop.
Herpes simplex-1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex-2 (HSV-2, the most common type) are considered sexually transmitted diseases. Herpesvirus can be transmitted from a mother to her developing fetus, which may impair neurological development and can be fatal.
Esai Morales in 2007 In July 2007, Morales was sued by a former live-in girlfriend who alleged the former "NYPD Blue" star assaulted her and gave her herpes. The Superior Court lawsuit filed on July 19, 2007 by attorney Gloria Allred on behalf of Elizabeth Mazzocchi alleged "intentional and negligent transmission of a sexually transmitted disease, assault, battery and breach of oral contract." Morales has denied the allegations. Gloria Allred no longer represents Elizabeth Mazzocchi.[4]
Severe and even fatal forms of herpes, with generalized disease and nervous system involvement, can develop in newborns or in those with immune deficiencies (such as those with AIDS or certain cancers). In rare instances, women who acquire genital herpes for the first time in late pregnancy may have a severe disease course. Antiviral medications are available that can moderate symptoms and reduce the death rate in these most serious cases.
