Heretic

The Heretic of the North is the first installment of a blood-drenched political fantasy in which nations and religions clash and countries are torn apart by civil, mercantile, and religious intrigue. Reminiscent of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Heretic is a substantive, well-crafted novel filled with the sweat, grit, and ugliness of war.

The Heretic's specialization spell lines are unique in Dark Age of Camelot. Where the cleric and friar classes have Rejuvenation baseline/Rejuvenation specline and Enhancement baseline/Enhancement specline spells, the Heretic will have Rejuvenation baseline spells and Arawn's Fire specline spells, as well as Enhancement baseline and Cthonic Accretion specline spells. This allows the Heretic to spec high in their offensive damage line, while receiving the benefits of a high Rejuvenation/Arawn's Fire spec for the Rejuvenation baseline spells. The Arawn's Fire spec includes single target and area effect focus damage spells. Strategically, that means the Heretic will start attacking a target, and while their damage will start off slowly, it will eventually ramp up over the course of 10-20 seconds to match that of a pure damage dealing caster. Arawn's Fire ... has lower damage, uninterruptible versions of the focus damage spells, as well as a focus DD/Snare and an insta-cast snare for escape purposes.

The Heretic of the North skillfully juggles all of these viewpoints and more, weaving a complex story of pride, ambition, vengeance, and zealotry. Brommer spent five years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and his experience shows in the novel’s gritty, unromantic portrayal of combat and injury. This is a solid low fantasy, with magic firmly placed in a support role and the Syt appearing to be the only other race to exist on the continent besides humans — and they are near-human, just different enough from humans to be unable to sire children on the human women they abduct.

Raven Software teamed up with id Software for the second time in its creation of the hit fantasy action game Heretic. Based on a modified Doom engine, Heretic pioneered a revolutionary new inventory system for character item use that has become commonplace in the FPS genre. id Software published the game under its flag and it was distributed by GT Interactive.

Heretic is the third book in Bernard Cornwell's much-acclaimed Grail Quest series, a series that many were initially cautious about because it represented something of a change of pace for the master historical novelist. But Cornwell quickly demonstrated that this period of history was well within his remit, and the sequence has proved to be among his most mesmerising work.
