Herbert Hoover, who was born nine years after the Civil War ended and died just as the Vietnam War burst into flame, was a most remarkable fellow. And although he was an Iowa farm boy by birth, he was an Oregonian during his formative years. It's the eager young Bert Hoover who is saluted today at the Hoover-Minthorn House, some 25 miles southwest of Portland, in the heart of the Willamette Valley.

Hoover's day at the White House began with a game of medicine ball at 7:30. The game was like volleyball with an 6 pound ball tossed over a 10 foot net on a court. It was scored like tennis. This was Hoover's daily exercise. After breakfast he would work for half an hour in his office on letters, papers or writing an address. He had appointments every 15 minutes for the rest of the morning.

Thankfully, the spot where young Bert Hoover recycled the pear crop is not marked, but the humble Italianate house where he lived for five years has been carefully restored. Visitors to the seven-room home will see toys Hoover played with, original bedroom furniture, and the very seashells that sat on a whatnot. Pear trees still grow in adjacent Hoover Park. In fact, Hoover's birthday is celebrated every August 10 with pear cake.

Many of Hoover's efforts as Commerce Secretary centered on the elimination of waste and the increase of efficiency in business and industry. This included such things as reducing labor losses from trade disputes and seasonal fluctuations, reducing industrial losses from accident and injury, and reducing the amount of crude oil spilled during extraction and shipping. One major achievement was to promote progressive ideals in the areas of standardization products and designs. He energetically promoted international trade by opening offices overseas that gave advice and practical help to businessmen. He was especially eager to promote Hollywood films overseas. [Hart 1998] His "Own Your Own Home" campaign was a collaboration with organizations working to promote ownership of single-family dwellings, including the Better Houses in America movement, the Architects' Small House Service Bureau, and the Home Modernizing Bureau.
