Herbert Beerbohm Tree: Haymarket Theatre
built 236 days ago
Named after Herbert Beerbohm Tree, the famous actor-manager at Her Majesty's Theatre, where he was born in the 1970s, the rather large tabby was London's longest-serving theatre cat. He was the resident mouser at the Globe Theatre (Now the Gielgud Theatre) in London's west end. Many performers were often upstaged when Beerbohm would wander on stage during a performance.

It was during Beerbohm Tree's time in Rosary Gardens that he made the transition from acting to management, first at the Comedy Theatre and then the Haymarket. Tree staged Wilde's A Woman of No Importance and George du Maurier's Trilby. His other achievements included opening Her Majesty's Theatre and co-founding the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He played Professor Higgins opposite Mrs Patrick Campbell's Eliza Doolittle in the first English production of Shaw's Pygmalion.

Herbert was educated in England and Germany. Taking the stage name of Herbert Beerbohm Tree, he made his amateur debut in London in 1876 and turned professional two years later. In 1882 he married Helen Maud Holt (1863–1937), who frequently appeared on the stage with him. He was a striking success in 1884 in the role of a curate, and in 1887 he became lessee and manager of the Haymarket Theatre, which he ran with great success for 10 years.

The play enjoyed success in the 18th century with Thomas Betterton, the 19th century with William Charles Macready and Beerbohm Tree. However the play notably disappeared from production in times of political disquiet such as the English Civil War (when the theatres were closed) and from 1780 to 1812 when there may have been fears that the ideas of the French revolution may spread to the UK.
