Heracles: Lernean Hydra

Heracles ... had to fight off a giant crab sent by Hera. Heracles had to kill the crab first before he could face the Hydra. Hera rewarded the crab for its service, by placing the crab in a constellation, known as Cancer.

Heracles kept on chopping off the Hydra's heads. But for every one it chopped off two more grew in its place. Soon the Hydra had a lot more heads than it started out with!

Eurystheus was sure that Heracles had cheated. He knew that no one could cut off all of the Hydra's regenerating heads. Heracles himself wasn't talking: And that was the situation when they went before the judge. Just as it looked as if Heracles would with the labor, Iolaus appeared in the courtroom to tell what he knew. When the judge asked who had called him, he said no one, but that he was______.

As a second labour Eurystheus ordered Heracles 1 to kill the Hydra that lived in the swampy region of Lerna, a city south of Argos in the Peloponnesus. This beast which ravaged the country was, as the previous one, a child of Typhon and Echidna. Some affirm that the Hydra had a huge body with nine heads, eight of which were mortal, the middle one being immortal; but others have said that it had one hundred heads of serpent, or even countless heads; and still others, perhaps fearing the large amount of thoughts that so many heads could have produced, say that the Hydra had only one head.
