While walking through the wilderness, Heracles was set upon by the Dryopians. He killed their king, Theiodamas, and the others gave up and offered him Prince Hylas. He took the youth on as his weapons bearer and beloved. Years later, Heracles and Hylas joined the crew of the Argo. As Argonauts they only participated in part of the journey. In Mysia, Hylas was kidnapped by a nymph.

Heracles heard news about the Minyan army from Orchomenus had defeated and disarmed the Theban army. Heracles led a group of Theban youths, armed with old weapons from a temple. Heracles defeated the Minyan army, killing Erginus, king of Orchomenus.

Heracles was called to perfom twelve labors but ignored the callings. Even when King Eurystheus summoned Heracles to perform the labors he still ignored them untilHera decided to take matters into her own hands. She caused Heracles to go insane and he killed his own children. When Heraclesrealized what he had done and felt guilty. He put himself at the service of King Eurystheus to perform the twelve labors.

Heracles left Oechalia in anger, while Eurytus' son, Iphitus tried to persuade his father that the hero had won Iole's hand fairly. Eurytus banished his own son from his kingdom. Iphitus went to talk Heracles out of waging a war against his father, but Heracles again, possibly struck by madness, caused by Hera, murdered Iphitus in Tiryns.
