Heracles: Death
built 629 days ago
When Heracles 1 was eight months old, Hera, desiring his death, sent two serpents to his bed. But he strangled the beasts with his hands. And when he was eighteen years old, he slew the Lion of Cithaeron, which harried the kine of Amphitryon and Thespius.

Heracles had many other adventures after his labours, eventually culminating in his death (inadvertently) at the hands of his own wife who doubted his love for her. Heracles had a great many children from various women, collectively referred to as the Heraclidae, and many of the kings of ancient Greece traced their lines to one or another of these, notably the kings of Sparta.

Heracles was now free to return to Thebes and marry Deianira. Later the centaur Nessus tried to abduct Deianira; Heracles shot him with a poisoned arrow. The dying Nessus told Deianira to keep his blood, as it would always preserve Heracles' love. When Deianira later feared she was being supplanted by Iole, Deianira sent Heracles a garment soaked in Nessus' blood. It poisoned Heracles, who was taken to Olympus and endowed with immortality after death.

As his first Labor, Heracles killed the Nemean Lion. This was no easy feat, for the lion's skin was impenetrable by spears or arrows. Heracles blocked off the entrance to the lion's cave and throttled it to death with his bare hands. Ever afterwards he wore the lion's skin as a cloak and its gaping jaws as a helmet.

Heras hatred of Heracles was evident from birth, as she knew that he was the product of her husbands unfaithfulness. Heras jealousy was seen through her many attempts to take Heracles life, her calculating nature was obvious when sending the serpents into his cradle when he was less than a year old. Heracles unafraid throttles the serpents to their death with ease.

Part of one key to Heracles, and therefore his connection to many of the Centaurs, lies in the idea of poison. Now, a poison may be a chemical substance, but it is not limited to that. A poison is something very destructive; something that can cause injury, illness or death. It can be a thought or an emotion that eats away at one. (i.e. venomous jealousy.) In one myth, when Heracles was overcome by madness, you can see his irrational behavior as the result of a mental poison....caused by Hera's venomous jealousy.
