Hepatitis C: Blood
built 255 days ago
The Home Access hepatitis C test service allows a person to collect a sample of blood at home, mail it to a certified laboratory and learn the result via telephone within 10 days. After learning the test result, clients have an opportunity to talk live with a counselor 24 hours a day, seven days a week about the result. The test determines if the hepatitis C virus has ever been present in the person's body, not if the virus is active.

The risk of acquiring hepatitis C from the workplace depends on the amount of exposure to human blood or blood products and needlestick injuries. In general, occupational groups with increased risk include workers such as dentists, nurses, and laboratory personnel who are repeatedly exposed to human blood and who are at risk of needlestick injuries.

Hepatitis C (HCV) was discovered in the 1970s and was called "non-A, non-B hepatitis." Hepatitis C used to account for 90 percent of blood transfusion-related cases of hepatitis. Since the 1980s, blood tests for HCV effectively screen blood donors.

It was only in the late 1980s that a test was developed to identify Hepatitis C. While screening for Hepatitis B and HIV has become routine at hospitals, drug centers and blood banks, Hepatitis C is sometimes overlooked. The Medical College study suggests it may be widespread among cocaine users, including those who smoke crack cocaine.
At week 12, 10 of 16 study participants showed evidence that the amount of hepatitis C virus in their blood was falling -- called a virologic response. And nine of the 16 had a normal liver enzyme test.

The most effective means of preventing hepatitis C is to avoid contact with human blood. Do not inject illegal drugs and do not share toothbrushes, razors or other items that might have blood on them.
