For many years Henry co-hosted the United Cerebral Palsy telethons. For his charitable work he has been awarded the United Nations Peace Prize, the B'nai B'rith Champion of Youth Award and for acting he received the French government's highest civilian honor, the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Henry Winkler has been married to Stacey Weitzman since May 5, 1978. Winkler says he isn't easily attracted to teachers and the like so much as he is to actors and celebrities. Winkler and Weitzman have a 26-year-old son named Austin Winkler, who sings for the Oklahoma City-based rock band Hinder.

In 2003 Henry started writing a series of children's novels entitled Hank Zipzer: The World's Most Amazing Under-Achiever. The books are inspired by Henry's struggle throughout his education due to his learning challenges.

Henry Franklin Winkler was born on October 30, 1945 in Manhattan, New York. His parents, Harry Irving and Ilse Anna Maria Winkler, were Jewish immigrants who survived the German Holocaust, moving to the US in 1939. His dad was the president of an international lumber company while his mother worked alongside his father.
