Life Henry was born Enrico Nicola Mancini in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. His parents came from the Abruzzi region of Italy. Henry´s father, Quinto, was a steel worker who made his only child begin flute lessons at the age of 8.

Born In Cleveland, Ohio in 1924 but brought up in Pennsylvania, Henry Mancini began his career playing with the Glenn Miller band. Shortly afterwards, he worked for six years at Universal, working on comedies and horror films. His first big success came with THE GLENN MILLER STORY, which allowed him to score other films and, in the process, change the style of film scoring by injecting jazz elements into the traditional orchestral arrangements of the time. In his career, he was nominated for 18 Oscars and won 4. In addition, he won 20 Grammys and 2 Emmys, has had over 500 works published and is considered one of the most commercially successful film composers of all time. He collaborated frequently with writer/director Blake Edwards on projects such as PETER GUNN, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, the PINK PANTHER films and VICTOR/VICTORIA.

Henry Mancini was easily one of the greatest composers for film soundtracks, so putting together a collection of 17 songs nominated for various awards (Grammy, Golden Globe, or Academy Awards) was easy. But finding the proper mix of musicians was important. His daughter, Monica Mancini, is a talented singer in her own right, so she was an obvious choice. And it was only natural to invite tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson to reprise his most famous solo in "The Pink Panther Theme," which he recorded with Mancini for the original soundtrack. Henry Mancini was born into a musical family in 1924. He attended Julliard and, after a stint in the Air Force during World War II, joined the Glenn Miller-Tex Beneke orchestra. Mancini took a job with the Universal Studios music department in 1952 and began work as an independent composer and arranger in Hollywood in 1958. That year he did the music for Blake Edwards' TV detective series, Peter Gunn, the first of 26 film and television scores Mancini would do for Edwards. He wrote music for countless other movies and TV shows, and Ultimate Mancini centers on work which received awards or award nominations from the motion-picture and music industries. Mancini, who died in 1994, earned four Academy Awards and 20 Grammy Awards.
