In 1987, Jerome Kohlberg, Jr. resigned from the firm, and Henry Kravis and George Roberts continued to lead the firm. Under Kravis and Roberts the firm was responsible for the 1988 leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco. At a cost of $31.4 billion[4], it was then the highest price ever paid for a commercial enterprise. The publicity surrounding the event led to the story being dramatized in the book and film, Barbarians at the Gate. In early 1995, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co divested its remaining holdings in RJR Nabisco.

LEVERAGED buyout billionaire Henry Kravis (above) is now the King of Lake Worth in Palm Beach. According to local swells, Kravis has agreed to shell out $50 million for a mansion with more than 15,000 square feet on five landscaped acres. "It's absurd that anyone would pay that kind of money for something that's not even on the ocean," one broker told The Post's Braden Keil. While Kravis' purchase beats the previous lakeside price of $28.5 million, it still falls short of the $92 million Ron Perelman collected for his ocean-to-lake property a short distance away. Kravis did not return calls.
