Great Explorers - Henry Hudson Henry Hudson was the English navigator who crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1609 and became the first European to sail up what is now the Hudson River in New York. Little is known about Hudson's early life. In 1607 he was hired by the English Muscovy Company to lead the ship Hopewell on an expedition north of the European continent, in an effort to discover a northeastern sea passage to the spice islands of the South Pacific. He reached Greenland and Spitzbergen before his path was blocked by ice. On his second voyage, a year later, he made it as far as the archipelago of Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic Ocean. Still convinced that there might be a separate passage to the northeast, the merchants of the Dutch East India Company hired Hudson in 1609 to lead an expedition on the ship Halve Maen (Half Moon in English). Hudson had other ideas... and sailed in the other direction, across the Atlantic to North America.

Henry Hudson was an Englishman and accomplished navigator and sailor. It is unknown where and when he was born, but his four ocean voyages put his name on several places on the global map. On May 1, [1607], Hudson set sail from England aboard the Hopewell with his son and 11 crew members. He and his crew sailed closer to the North Pole than any other explorers. He was looking for a Northwest Passage to the Orient and found there was no way through the North Pole. He eventually returned to England.

New York, April 22/ 2004/PRNewswire/ -- By remarkable coincidence, 9/11 first figured prominently in the nation's history when Henry Hudson of the Dutch East India Company sailed through the narrows into New York Harbor in 1609. He named Manhattan after the Indian tribe that dwelled on the island. Fort Amsterdam was built there sixteen years later.
An English navigator and explorer, Henry Hudson set sail on four voyages in his lifetime. He looked for a Northwest Passage, discovered the Hudson Bay and Hudson River. His efforts led to the eventual establishment of New Amsterdam (later called New York). During his last voyage in 1610, rebellious mutineers seized Hudson, his son, and seven others and set them adrift in a small boat without provisions. They were never heard from again.
In 1609, Henry Hudson was asked by the Dutch East Indies Companies to find a passage to Asia, by sailing North across the Artic north of Russia. Hudson was unable to make the passage, because of the ice that stopped him. Instead, he decided to head westward, to try to find a passage to Asia. Hudson crossed the Atlantic in his ship, the Half Moon and entered both the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. Hudson concluded that these did not lead to the Pacific. He then entered the New York Bay.
