Henry Hudson: Voyages
built 267 days ago
In making this historic journey, Hudson claimed the region for the Dutch and opened the land for the settlers who followed. Hudson´s voyage, nearly ten years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, led to the establishment, in 1614, of the Dutch trading post, Fort Nassau, at present day Albany, New York. The first European settlements in the States of Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were built by the Dutch beginning in 1624 and formed the Dutch colony of New NetherLands, or Nieu Nederlandf.

Hudson coat of arms Along the way, Hudson traded with numerous native tribes and obtained different shells, beads and furs. His voyage established Dutch claims to the region and the fur trade that prospered there. New Amsterdam in Manhattan became the capital of New Netherland in 1625.
Map of Hudson's Voyages On his second voyage, Hudson ... used the Hopewell. This journey lasted from April to August of 1608. He still did not find the passage he was looking for, but he did bring back important maps of the Great Barrier Reef and photographs of the various people he met on his journey.
Not much is known for certain about Hudson's life or any of his voyages before 1607. He must have learned his craft and skills by travelling with contemporary seafarers, probably British mariners (possibly even sailing with John Davis on one his voyages to the Arctic) because by the time of his first recorded voyage, he was a captain.
