The biggest chunk of the portfolio -- originally developed primarily by operatives of Pittsburgh investor Henry Hillman -- is in the Portland area. Among the 1.4 million square feet of properties there is the 655,000-square-foot suburban Kruse Woods office park, which commands some of the Portland vicinity's highest rents.

In 1969, Pittsburgh businessman Henry Hillman was in front of the Downtown Pittsburgh Kauffman's Department Store. Mr. Hillman, who graduated from Princeton University with a geology degree, noticed a crowd's reaction to a store display windows - one filled with a brilliant cluster of minerals. He realized the crowd was more mesmerized with the minerals than the actual items being sold.

Henry Hillman, Jr., company president, said in a press release that the construction contract has been signed with Nichols Brothers Boat Builders in Freeland, Wash. Guido Perla & Associates, naval architects, designed the new vessel. The United States Maritime Administration will provide a loan guarantee to fund the project with construction and outfitting costs expected to exceed $50 million.

It took a decade for the museum, along with the generosity of Henry L. Hillman and The Hillman Foundation, Inc., to acquire exhibit-quality specimens for the new hall. Finally, in September 1980, the Hillman Hall of Minerals & Gems opened. This dramatic permanent exhibit introduced the spectacular beauty of the mineral world to the public.
