Henry Ford Hospital is a 903-bed tertiary care hospital, education and research complex in Detroit's New Center Area. The Hermelin Brain Tumor Center at Henry Ford Hospital focuses on brain and spine tumors and is considered one of the largest neuro-oncology centers in the nation. It ... houses one of the most comprehensive brain tumor research labs and biorepository in the country. The Center continues to focus on novel investigations to help control brain tumor growth and spread, including molecular targeted therapy; gene therapy and anti-angiogenesis therapy.

Henry Ford Hospital is the flagship hospital for Henry Ford Health System, one of the country's largest health care systems. The health system integrates primary and specialty care with research and education, and includes six owned or affiliated hospitals, a 540,000 member health maintenance organization, 22 ambulatory centers and other health-related entities located throughout southeastern Michigan. Last year, the health system recorded 2.5 million ambulatory visits.

The Henry Ford Health System assumed full ownership of the 153-bed Cottage Hospital last year, after owning 30% of the facility. The hospital maintains 110 beds, but has room to expand to its fuller capacity.

A clinical study conducted at Henry Ford Hospital on the use of Genentech’s Avastin (bevacizumab) to extend the survival of patients with the most common and aggressive type of brain cancer has yielded results that were significantly better than expected. The randomized Phase II study focused on patients with glioblastoma multiforme whose cancer had recurred after first- or second-line therapy. The study revealed that more than a third of patients who were treated with Avastin alone, and more than half of those treated with Avastin in combination with the chemotherapy drug irinotecan, lived without further progression of the disease for a period of six months. Historical estimates suggest that only 15 percent of patients with this aggressive and usually incurable type of brain cancer live without their cancer progressing within six months. Kahlo painted "Henry Ford Hospital" immediately after she was released from the hospital following this second of her three miscarriages. It was the frankest work of this famous self-portraitist to date, although some of the significance of the painting's gore comes from its relation to the tradition of Mexican "retablos," votive paintings giving thanks to a (Christian) holy figure for being saved from situations that are typically depicted at their worst.
