Dr. Henry Fok Ying Tung, a well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist in Hong Kong, was one of the earliest Overseas Chinese who supported and participated in China's Reform and Opening. He had a vision for a developed and modern China. With this foresight, Dr Fok devoted efforts in modernizing China and contributed generously to the development of Inland China.

Henry Fok founded the Fok Ying Tung Foundation in 1984, and it is now one of the largest philanthropic organizations in Hong Kong. Fok founded a high-technology business park in Nansha. He is said to have visited the site more than 500 times, and through the Foundation, pledged HK$800 million (US$100 million) to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2005 to support the initiative.[1][2]

Dr. Fok was represented in Calgary on September 19th by his son Ian Fok (left). Mr. Ian Fok is the Managing Director of the Fok Ying Tung Group and Vice Chairman of the Fok Ying Tung Foundation in Hong Kong. He is the youngest Chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, representing more than 6,000 business and industrial members in Hong Kong. Mr. Ian Fok serves as the Council and Court Member in academic institutions in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China, including the Hong Kong Management Association, the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, the University of Macau and Jinan University.

The campus of the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School is in Nansha, Guangzhou, just 75km, or 75 minutes by ferry from Hong Kong. Nansha is strategically well placed as it sits at the center of the Pearl River Delta. It will provide both the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School and HKUST a useful base to realize its China plan, as well as its vision to become a leading university with significant international impact and strong local commitment.
