There is little doubt that Henry grew to suspect anyone who was of high social birth and in terms of wealth independent of the king. Henry frequently overstepped the mark with regards to his suspicions and equated anyone who seemed to question what he believed with disloyalty. Henry could not separate the fact that someone could be totally loyal to the king but could ... hold different beliefs to him on certain issues. In 1520, Wolsey was given written instructions by Henry to keep an eye on certain members of the nobility like the Henry Brandon, Duke of Suffolk and the Duke of Buckingham. Wolsey needed little encouragement to build a case of disloyalty against any member of the senior nobility – the result of the hurtful comments he had to endure about his background from the majority of those in senor noble positions. No case could be formulated against Suffolk.

The tragic Lady Jane Grey was the daughter of Henry Grey, Marquis Dorset and Frances Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk. Jane's claim to the throne was acquired through her maternal grandmother, Mary Tudor, (pictured left) who was the beautiful younger sister of Henry VIII. After the death of her first husband, the King of France, Mary fell in love with and married Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, a country gentleman ennobled by Henry VIII. She was considered by contemporaries to have married far beneath her.

In 1531, Henry banished Catalina de Aragon from court. He and Anne were constantly together and he made no secret of his intention to marry her. The Suffolks were not happy about this but what could they do? They depended on Henry for everything. Mary made a cutting remark about Anne sometime in early 1532 and refused to accompany Henry and Anne on a state visit to France. Her husband warned Henry that Anne may have slept with Sir Thomas Wyatt.

His paternal grandparents were a senior Sir William Brandon of Wangford, Suffolk (d. 1491 ) and Elizabeth Wingfield (d. April 28 , 1497 ). His paternal grandfather had served as Marshal of Marchalsea. His maternal grandparents were Sir Henry Bruyn and Elizabeth Darcy.
