Henry Brandon: Bo Peep
built 257 days ago
Born Henry Kleinbach, the name under which he appeared until 1936, Brandon was a tall man with black curly hair; he occasionally played the handsome lead but was more often typecast to play villains. As the latter, he appeared as white, Indian, German, and Asian men. Brandon's film career began with Babes in Toyland (1934) and went on to span fifty years. He played villains whom the audiences loved to hate in serials in the '30s and '40s, such as the Cobra in Jungle Jim, the mastermind criminal Blackstone in Secret Agent X-9, Captain Lasca in Buck Rogers, and a sinister Oriental in Drums of Fu Manchu. Brandon played Indian chiefs no fewer than 26 times, notably in two John Ford westerns. He had occasional leading roles on New York stage, such as in a 1949 revival of Medea in which he played a virile Jason opposite Judith Anderson.

Since then, Brandon has grown in spurts, beginning with the first general store opened by Dan Galvin on the corner of Moon Avenue and Victoria Street. In 1905, a school was built on Parsons Avenue and Victoria allowed new teachers to board with her so that the new school would have a teacher.

Henry was born in Berlin, in 1912, as Henry Kleinbach. At the age of 17 he headed for California to become an actor. It was there that he was first discovered, while staring in a stage production of "The Drunkard." Hal Roach was in the audience one night and realized that its star would be the perfect villain for his upcoming Laurel and Hardy feature, Babes in Toyland. Of course, Henry was in heavy makeup trying to look like an evil old man. Apparently it was a very convincing makeup job, because back stage Mr. Roach set up an appointment with the actor. He was later very surprised to find out that his villain was only 21 years old!

For many years Brandon was the Crown Prosecutor in Wellington, but was not highly regarded as a pleader or public speaker. He was... an expert conveyancer and a competent legal draftsman. Brandon was deeply, interested in education and became the first chairman of the Wellington College Board of Governors. He was a director of the Colonial Insurance Co., of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, and president of the Wellington Law Society.

What the King did not know was that she was a woman with a past. She had had liaisons before her marriage to the King and thought she could continue after her marriage. She found the King old and unappealing and planned to give the King a prince by her lover.
