Hellsing is a manga series by Japanese manga artist Kouta Hirano with an anime adaptation. Hellsing chronicles the efforts of the mysterious and secret Royal Order of Protestant Knights, Hellsing, as it combats vampires, zombie-like creatures called ghouls a powerful werewolf, and other supernatural foes who threaten the kingdom of England. Overall, Hellsing is the best anime of its kind out there. With some of the coolest characters ever (Arucard is the best), great music, great art, and an outstanding plot, it is one of the best animes on the market. If you like shows with vampires and/or the undead, buy this. If you like great action scenes and lots of blood and violence, buy this. If you are anybody else, still give Hellsing a chance. You might be surprised in the end.

Hellsing does have plenty of action and it seems as though the anime creators tried to pack in too much action, which left them with too little time to develop other areas of the series. Even though the action sequences, particularly those with Arucard, are very nicely done, at other times the animation does drop a level and for a thirteen episode series that's a disappointment. But in some respects this off set by a quite original soundtrack that works especially well with certain mismatching visuals.

Hellsing is extremely violent, has some sexual moments and the language is pretty strong in places. Some might find the religious themes offensive. There are only 13 episodes and it can be found in some rental locations on DVD. The story is based closely on the comic book which is still running in Japan and partially available in translation here.

Hellsing draws on inspiration from dozens of different anime/manga/movies/novels/etc. Some are coincidental, while others are actually cited as sources of inspiration. One thing no one has agreed upon is the exact details of the "Vampire Lore" of the Hellsing universe which is a mixture of many different fictional portrayals including Stoker and Ricean vampires. This is made no easier by the introduction of artificial vampires.
