Hellsing is not the only vampire-hunting organization in the world. The Catholic Church has its own secret vampire-hunting organization, code-named "Iscariot 13" and answerable only to the Vatican. Just as Alucard is Hellsing’s trump card against the vampires, the Vatican’s ultimate weapon against the vampires is Father Alexander Anderson. Anderson is a priest that has been augmented with nanomachine technology that grants him vast regenerative powers, and is armed with an arsenal of baptized throwing-bayonets. While the Hellsing Organization is willing to use vampires to fight other vampires, Iscariot 13 kills vampires on sight, and is disgusted with Hellsing. Because the Hellsing Organization is Protestant-run (their formal name is actually “The Royal Order of Protestant Knights”) and Iscariot 13 is Catholic-run, they are often at each other’s throats, and actually fight each other more bitterly than they do the vampires (to the point that Anderson will zealously slaughter human Hellsing agents he encounters).

Hellsing Ultimate is a Japanese OVA series more closely based on the Hellsing manga series. The OVA series is mostly based on an-after Hellsing series, starting with Alucard turning the young officer Victoria into a vampire, and the accident with Father Alexander Anderson, Jan and Luke's attack close by as a follower (OVA 2). The OVA series is being produced by animation studio Satelight and Geneon, and right now is in the process of producing Hellsing OVA 4.

For those who’ve already seen Hellsing, this new retelling of the same story only offers one real bonus: new visuals. The Hellsing TV show was already a visually intense series, with gorgeous and bizarre images abounding as Arucard stretched and distorted his body into increasingly inhuman, terrifying shapes. Hellsing Ultimate carves the story down to its core, but keeps a similar focus on intense color, intense action, and bizarrely unsettling images: Arucard isn’t human, and the animation never lets the viewers forget it. The imagery is terrific, and the story ensures that the animators get a workout.

Overall, Hellsing Ultimate is a welcome addition to the Hellsing collection after nearly five years since the first anime appeared. It has lost none of the coolness of the series while providing more action and humor. If the OAV series is successful, it's very likely that a second Hellsing anime TV series will be made.

The Starz Edge premium cable television channel has announced that Black Lagoon and Hellsing Ultimate will be added to its late night Animidnight block. Hellsing will run for the first time on Monday, February 11, while the first two Black Lagoon episodes will run on March 10. Animidnight premiered in the 12 a.m. Tuesday night timeslot earlier this week with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society. Upcoming showtimes will include the Fullmetal Alchemist movie and episodes of the Desert Punk television series

In these situations, Hellsing calls upon its trump card, Alucard. Who is more suited to fight a vampire than a vampire himself? Alucard is the ultimate warrior used to assassinate vampires; he is deadly efficient and knows their powers and weaknesses. After all, he is one of their kind. But Alucard is one of the most powerful vampires in existence and rumored to be the legendary lord of the vampires himself. Just spell Alucard backwards.
