Helen Reddy: Music Guide
built 202 days ago
Reddy or Not was written by and stars Joanna Parson and Lance Werth as two lovably quirky fans who deal with disaster through the music of Helen Reddy. Will this idealistic woman and this excitable gay man become fast friends or “American Idol” combatants? Directed by Joseph P. McDonnell (Urinetown 2000 NY Fringe Festival) with musical direction by Barbara Anselmi, Reddy or Not includes 70’s pop chart hits like “I Am Woman,” “You and Me Against the World”, and “Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady.” It is a hilarious hour that will inspire a whole new generation of “Helen-Heads!”

While not as thorough or definitive as other greatest-hits compilations for either artist, this budget-line Fuel 2000 two-disc set features highlights from the careers of both Paul Anka and Helen Reddy. Anka's disc focuses largely on his career in the '70s and includes "(You're) Having My Baby" and "Times of Your Life" as well as duets with Odia Coates like "One Man Woman/One Woman Man" and "There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love." Reddy's disc captures two versions of her most well-known hit, "I Am Woman," as well as "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Angie Baby," and ten others. Neither disc presents a complete portrait of its subject artist, but this could be something for die-hard fans to fill holes in their soft rock collections. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

At the height of her fame in the late 1970s, Helen Reddy was a headliner with a full chorus of backup singers and dancers to standing room only crowds on The Strip in Las Vegas. Reddy's opening act was the then up and coming Joan Rivers. In 1976, Reddy covered the Beatles song "The Fool on the Hill" for the ephemeral musical documentary All This and World War II.
