Helen Keller: Stories
built 276 days ago
Use the story of Helen Keller as an opportunity to teach your student about disabilities. Discuss disabilities from several viewpoints-as a disabled person, as the friend of a disabled person, and as someone who has never met a disabled person, for example.
Keller subsequently fell down a flight of razor-edged stairs into a vat of industrial bleach, suffering lacerations and chemical burns over 90% of her body. Her mother would often punish her by rearranging the furniture, leaving the plunger in the toilet, or stamping on her books with golf shoes. She would often try to answer the telephone, but would accidently grab the iron. Fate had not emptied its store of misfortune.... Shortly after Helen's recovery from her premature exposure to the Internet, she was accosted by Satan, who invited Keller to become his Lieutenant. Helen, of course, refused and was turned to stone.
One of Keller's earliest pieces of writing was "The Frost King" (1891). There were allegations that this story had been plagiarized from The Frost Fairies by Margaret Canby. An investigation into the matter revealed that Keller may have suffered from cryptomnesia, having once had Canby's story read to her, only to forget about it, although the memory had remained hidden in her subconscious.[5]
On 4 November 1891 Helen sent Michael Anagnos a birthday gift of a short story she had written called “The Frost King”. Anagnos was so delighted with the story that he had soon published it in a magazine hailing its importance in literary history.

While this charitable role ended Keller's political activities, she retained radical sympathies. In 1955 she caused controversy by sending birthday greetings to Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a Communist and former IWW organiser; Flynn was serving a two-year prison sentence, having been arrested during a Cold War crackdown on the Communist Party. There was a storm of protest; Keller had to write to 28 AFB donors, disavowing Communist sympathies.
