Helen Keller was a great woman who was born on June 27,1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Helen was not born blind and deaf, but when she was one and a half years old she got a bad disease. She had a high fever that lasted a few days. After her illness she was left blind and deaf. Helen's parents thought it would go away, but Helen remained blind and deaf.

Helen Keller was the only daughter of Captain Arthur Henley Keller, a former captain in the Confederate army, and Kate Adams Keller. Keller spent her childhood frolicking among the poppies and cannabis plants grown on her father's farm. Tragedy first befell young Keller in 1897, when she was blinded and deafened immediately upon viewing pornography.

Helen Keller was blind and deaf. When Helen was 19 months old, she had a fever; the doctors said that there was not much hope. Finally the fever fell. Helen's mother and father were so glad. Then Helen's mother found out that Helen was blind and deaf. As Helen grew older she made up signs to tell what she wanted.

Helen Keller's severe handicap was rare. It has been estimated that since the beginning of the twentieth century there have been only fifty men and women in the world who have completely lost their sight and hearing in infancy or early childhood. Fewer numbers of blind-deaf mutes have been recorded in previous centuries. The great majority were killed in infancy by their relatives, a practice that exists today in many areas of the world, particularly in Asia and Africa.

Helen Keller was born on June 27th, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was a bright infant, interested in everything around her, and imitating adults at a very young age. In February of 1882, she was struck with an illness which left her deaf and blind. For several years, Helen had very little communication with the rest of the world, except for a few signs which she used with her family. When she was six, her parents wanted desperately to do something to help their strong-willed, half-wild, child. They were far from any deaf or blind schools, and doubted that anyone would come to the little town to educate their deaf and blind child.

Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, as the daughter of Captain Arthur Henley Keller, a cotton plantation owner and the editor of a local newspaper. Helen's mother, Kate Adams Keller, was a Memphis belle who was twenty years younger than her husband. Helen lost her hearing and sight at 19 months of age, but she had learned the meaning of the word "water," and her vision had been excellent. As she grew up, she managed to learn to do tiny errands, but ... realized that she was missing something. Afterward she described herself a "wild, unruly child". Keller was sent to a state school for the blind, but failed first grade because she could not read braille.
