1. Gaulle, Charles De -- Free French
   When the Germans were driven back, De Gaulle had no rivals for leadership in France. Therefore in the fall of 1944 the French Parliament unanimously elected him premier. De Gaulle had fiercely opposed the German enemy, and now he vigorously defended France against the influence of his powerful allies Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin Roosevelt. De Gaulle once stated that he never feared Adolf Hitler, who, he knew, was doomed to defeat, but did fear that his allies would dominate France and Europe in the postwar period.

3. Maginot Line -- Germans
   The Maginot Line was the last great gun-bearing line of subterranean forts built before World War II. Although it acquired an unjustified reputation as a white elephant, the Maginot Line fulfilled the role for which it was built, allowing the French High Command the opportunity to mass its forces and counter the German invasion. Unfortunately, the French leadership failed to make the most of its assets, with the resulting disastrous outcome.
4. Hitler, Adolf -- Weimar Germany
   Adolf Hitler was born in Austria in 1889. He was a compelling, smart man that if traveled down a different path during his time of power, would have been remebered as a great man. He rose to power in Germany during the 1920s at a time of social and economic uprising. Failing to take power by force in 1923, he eventually won power by with his ability to make compelling speaches. Once in power, he had all Semitismatic people killed and launched a program of world domination as he eliminated the Jews. His Reich barely lasted 12 years and he died a defeated man.
5. Erwin Rommel -- Field Marshal Erwin Rommel
   For a time, Erwin Rommel was Hitler's favorite general. Gaining prominence in 1940 as a commander of a panzer division that smashed the French defenses, Rommel went on to command the Afrika Korps where his ability to inspire his troops and make the best of limited resources, prompted Hitler to elevate him to the rank of Field Marshall. In 1943, Hitler placed Rommel in command of fortifying the "Atlantic Wall" along the coast of France - defenses intended to repel the inevitable invasion of Europe by the Allies. By the beginning of 1943, Rommel's faith in Germany's ability to win the war was crumbling, as was his estimation of Hitler.
6. Adolf Hitler -- September Germany
   Adolf Hitler was the Austrian-born Chancellor and President of Germany from January 30, 1933 until his death on April 30, 1945. He was ... the leader (German: Der Führer) of the National Socialist German Workers Party (National-sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or Nazi Party) which gained political power through threat, intimidation, and outright violence throughout Germany in the aftermath of the First World War. Hitler’s policies and beliefs resulted in the mass extermination of the Jews, Gypsies, and other peoples he considered “inferior” throughout central and eastern Europe. This was directly responsible for the outbreak of World War II, causing the deaths of untold millions on and off the battlefield, and ending only with his own death in his Berlin bunker.
