Hedy Lamarr: Scenes
built 643 days ago
Hedy Lamarr was particularly attractive and it was her fifth film that was released in 1932 that took her into the limelight. The film entitled "Extase" (Ecstacy) had long scenes in which Hedy Lamarr appeared nude. The scenes created a world wide sensation, and caused the film to be banned in the USA, although a considerably edited version was released some years later. It was particularly noticed at the Vienna Film Festival, and it was said to be a particular favourite with the men there! It was ... banned in Nazi Germany by Adolf Hitler because Lamarr was Jewish.

Almost from the beginning, Hedy was a topic of conversation. In 1938 a teenage Lamarr, then known as Hedwig Kiesler, starred in the Czech film "Ecstasy." The film caused an international scandal thanks to a scene where the young chanteuse runs around a forest entirely nude. The studios quickly blacklisted Hedy, but as the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad press. Before long everyone knew her name.

In an interview included in the DVD release of Blazing Saddles (1974), Mel Brooks claims that Hedy Lamarr threatened to sue the producers. He says she believed the film's running "Hedley Lamarr" joke infringed her right to publicity. In one scene, one character even warns another that Hedy would sue. Brooks says they settled out of court for a small sum.

For her appearance in Ekstase (1933), Hedy is credited as being the first nude woman as well as portraying the first sex-scene in film history. Scenes were cut and additional ones added in order to be able to release it in some countries.
