Heavy Gear is a game set in the futuristic world of Terra Nova, a colony world abandoned, then invaded by Earth. Political undercurrents flow through everyone's lives, making the future uncertain. There is a tenuous peace between the polar governments in light of a recent attack on Peace River, though even in times of peace, mistrust runs high between the polar governments.

On Heavy Gears - Heavy Gears are the game’s namesake. They are mechs and they are the building blocks upon which Terra Novan society is built. At first, they were used for construction and industry, but later they were adapted for warfare. The Heavy Gear’s played a huge role in the defeat of the Earth invasion force during the War of the Alliance. Game groups may either focus their games around the Heavy Gear, or use it more as a function of narrative action and support.

Heavy Gear is set in the middle future, 6132 AD. In the core book eight (yes, only eight) pages are dedicated to the setting. The game takes place on Terra Nova; one of Earth’s orphaned colonies. Terra Nova is similar in many ways to Earth but there are some differences. The planet is closer to its sun, Helios, so it is hot. As a result, the equatorial belt is unbearable and not fit for human habitation.
