There are more than twenty million copies of her books in print and she has been published in more than fifteen languages. Heather lives with her husband and five children in Miami, Florida.

Heather grew up in Dade County, Florida, and attended the University of South Florida at Tampa, majoring in theater arts and touring Europe and parts of Asia and Africa as part of her studies. After college, she acted in dinner theaters, modeled, waitressed, and tended bar. After the birth of her third child, she was determined to devote her efforts to her writing: her dream. She sold her first book in 1982.

During her childhood, Heather was forced to move quite often because of her father's job. At age four, Heather's family relocated to Virginia where she attended Sumac Elementary school. Nine-year-old Heather next was taken to Southern California where she studied at Lindero Canyon Middle School and finally Agoura High School, in which she shared the same high school with Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson of Linkin Park, and Shane Stanley. Heather was shy and quiet and her peers labeled her a theater geek.
