As a supporting actress, Graham was cast in a number of parts that brought her critical notice, including Nadine in Drugstore Cowboy (1989). However, her breakthrough role was that of 1970s porn starlet Roller Girl in Boogie Nights (1997), for which she received several award nominations. Her first starring role was in 1999 with her lead role as Felicity Shagwell in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. She ... appeared in the music video for "American Woman"- a song which Lenny Kravitz covered for the film's soundtrack. More recently, she starred as Mary Kelly in the film From Hell (2001), based on the story of Jack the Ripper.
Heather then enrolled in UCLA with a major in English. However, after two years, she could no longer resist the lure of showbiz and dropped out of school to pursue acting again. She got roles in notable movies such as "Six Degrees of Separation" (1993) and "Swingers" (1996) before "Boogie Nights" (1997) came along. In this movie about the porn industry, she played the dim-witted, but sexy Rollergirl. The movie got people talking - and looking too. Her next big movie was "Lost in Space" (1998) where she played Judy Robinson.
Heather Graham's strictly religious parents severed contact with her after she played a porn star in Boogie Nights. The Hollywood beauty, who had a strict Catholic upbringing, admits her family are unhappy with her sex symbol status. Heather,

It's amazing that Heather Graham, at school mocked as "a flat-chested geek", should have grown up to be regarded as one of modern-day cinema's few sex sirens. Not only is she seen as physically beautiful, but ... in contemporary parlance, completely "up for it". This is partly due to her most famous roles: as porn star Rollergirl in Boogie Nights: agent Felicity Shagwell in Austin Powers 2: prostitute Mary Kelly in From Hell: a voracious starlet, sleeping her way to the top in Bowfinger: then another porn star in The Guru. On top of these, there's been a string of high-profile boyfriends, and a succession of sexually candid interviews concerning her purposeful rebellion against a strict Catholic upbringing. Seldom is her name mentioned without sex being mentioned also. And even more seldom is her acting ability discussed - and this is an actress talented enough to have been nominated for an Independent Spirit award for one of her very first roles.

In the next few years that followed, Heather went on to play diverse roles in films such as Six Degrees of Separation, which starred Will Smith, Don't Do It and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues. While Heather was furthering her acting career, she piqued the interest of filmmakers like James Toback and Jon Favreau. Apparently, Favreau took Heather swing dancing one night, and a year and a half later, she played Lorraine in his nearly legendary movie Swingers. Toback soon after had his opportunity to work with her and cast her in his film entitled Two Girls and A Guy.
Heather Graham's career took off like a flash after her portrayal of Rollergirl in "Boogie Nights." Acting in films since the mid-1980's, Graham's credentials include starring roles in "The Guru" and "Sidewalks of New York."
