Heartburn itself is a symptom. Other symptoms ... caused by gastroesophageal reflux can be associated with heartburn. Often heartburn sufferers salivate excessively or regurgitate stomach contents into their mouths, leaving a sour or bitter taste. Frequent gastroesophageal reflux leads to additional complications including difficult or painful swallowing, sore throat, hoarseness, coughing, laryngitis, wheezing, asthma, pneumonia, gingivitis, bad breath, and earache.

Heartburn occurs when the contents of the stomach back up into the oesophagus, causing a burning sensation. Most healthy people experience heartburn from time to time. Overweight people can suffer from constant heartburn, which often leads to complications.
Digestive system Heartburn is usually easy to diagnose from the symptoms you describe to your doctor. Sometimes, heartburn can be confused with another stomach problem called dyspepsia. If the diagnosis is unclear, then you may be sent to a gastroenterologist for further testing.
