The move to include health-care REITs will give investors who track or benchmark against Morgan Stanley's REIT index another property sector to play. "When the index is broadened to include health-care REITs, investors in the index will benefit from a broader diversification in real-estate securities," says Debra A. Cafaro, chief executive of Ventas Inc., Louisville, Ky., one of the seven health-care REITs being included. Ms. Cafaro spearheaded the effort to get health-care REITs included in the index.

The latest point of contention: President Bush's veto on Oct. 3 of legislation to boost funding for a children's health insurance program.
