Emotional factors are not the only triggers of muscle-contraction headaches. Certain physical postures that tense head and neck muscles - such as holding one's chin down while reading - can lead to head and neck pain. So can prolonged writing under poor light, or holding a phone between the shoulder and ear, or even gum-chewing.

Going too long between meals can cause metabolic changes that trigger headaches. Eat some sort of snack, preferably carbohydrates and proteins such asfruit, cheese, or an energy bar. This will keep your blood sugar from that roller-coaster effect, too.

There are times when headaches attack after some people have been exposed to some triggers in the environment. Airborne allergens, changes in the weather, bright lights, loud noises and strong odors can sometimes be enough to set off a nasty headache.
According to some people, MSG or monosodium glutamate appears to trigger their migraines and headaches. There have been incidents where people who normally do not get headaches develop one after consuming MSG. There are people, though, who say they are able to consume MSG without experiencing migraines or headaches.
