A skeletal misalignment between your skull and first vertebra may cause headaches. Go to a chiropractor and have him/her check your alignment, including the jaw and top two vertebrae, two other areas that may cause headaches. Cluster headaches seem to respond well to chiropractic adjustment. Many times causes for a health condition don't seem related, so it becomes a process of elimination to see what the true cause is. This misalignment may be due to having forceps used during your birth, an accident or fall, a sports injury, orpoor posture or some of the reasons mentioned under muscle tension above. Research has shown that 77% of subjects with a history of chronic headaches showed a marked reduction or reversal of the normal cervical curvature.

The sudden start and brief duration of cluster headaches can make them difficult to treat. By the time medicine is absorbed into the body, the attack is often over. However, research scientists have identified several effective drugs for these headaches. The antimigraine drug ergotamine tartrate can subdue a cluster, if taken at the first sign of an attack. Injections of dihydroergotamine, a form of ergotamine tartrate, are sometimes used to treat clusters.

Contemporary doctors divide headaches into two large categories, primary and secondary, according to guidelines established by the International Headache Society (IHS) in 1988 and revised for republication in 2004. Primary headaches are those that are not caused by an underlying medical condition. There are three types of primary headaches: migraine, cluster, and tension headaches. More than 90% of all headaches are primary headaches. Secondary headaches are caused by disease or medical condition; they account for fewer than 10% of all headaches.
