Headache: Symptoms

[E]very headache you have makes it easier for your brain to have the next one. Many medications used to stop a headache will actually cause you to have more headaches. This is known as medication overuse headache or rebound headaches. In addition, many of the foods you are eating and how you are eating is making it easier to have a headache. Once again you have to treat the disease, not the symptom. If you had pneumonia you would not get better taking cough syrup!
Once a migraine headache has developed, the key is to treat it early, before the headache becomes more severe. A simple analgesic (acetaminophen or aspirin) is often the initial treatment to relieve symptoms. If this over-the-counter analgesic is not effective, prescription medication may be helpful.
A Hidden Cause of Headache Pain Keep a headache diary to help identify the source or trigger of your symptoms. Then modify your environment or habits to avoid future headaches. When a headache occurs, write down the date and time the headache began, what you ate for the past 24 hours, how long you slept the night before, what you were doing and thinking about just before the headache started, any stress in your life, how long the headache lasts, and what you did to make it stop. After a period of time, you may begin to see a pattern.
Childhood headache can be a sign of depression. Parents should alert the family pediatrician if a child develops headaches along with other symptoms such as a change in mood or sleep habits. Antidepressant medication and psychotherapy are effective treatments for childhood depression and related headache.

You will have to visit your doctor if your headache is not going away, getting stronger or if you experience additional symptoms like neuralgia, dizziness, sight problems or problems with the memory. A doctor can make a CT (computer tomography) of the brain and sinuses. Blood tests can be helpful as well.

Although headache pain is one of the most common symptoms of migraine, other associated symptoms include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can be difficult to diagnose. The debilitating pain of migraines, which can last from four to 72 hours if left untreated, often leads to lost time with family and friends.
