Headache: Pain
built 255 days ago
Typically the headache is benign, occurs suddenly, and produces a throbbing pain. Other headaches, more severe in intensity, may develop after prolonged exertion in heat, high humidity, or at altitude. These effort headaches usually last about one hour and are probably due to acute dehydration. Not surprisingly, footballers sometimes develop headaches and other unpleasant symptoms after heading a ball. These ‘footballers' migraines’ are more likely if the ball is not headed properly. Another common exercise-induced headache is called weight-lifter's headache.

Additional measures of efficacy included the achievement of a pain-free response, in which a patient has a post-dose pain score of 0 (or "no") headache pain. In the trial, AZ-104 showed statistically significant differences from placebo in this measure at the 2-hour time point with 30% of patients achieving pain-free status at the 2.5 mg dose (p = 0.01) and 28% at the 1.25 mg dose (p = 0.02). While the 5.0 mg dose was numerically superior to placebo with 21% pain-free, this group did not achieve a statistically significant response, compared to placebo (p = 0.12). The rate of pain-free response at 2 hours in patients receiving placebo was 8%. Using survival analysis for pain free response, all three dose groups were statistically superior (p < 0.05) to placebo during the 4-hour post-treatment time period that the patients remained in the clinic.

The pain of a classic migraine headache may be described as intense, throbbing, or pounding and is felt in the forehead, temple, ear, jaw, or around the eye. Classic migraine starts on one side of the head but may eventually spread to the other side. An attack lasts 1 to 2 pain-wracked days.

Acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin are some of the most common headache remedies. Other methods for alleviating the pain include lying down, using a cool compress over the eyes, and sleep. Sometimes the best way to treat a headache is to prevent it before it starts, and you can do this most effectively when you understand what the most common causes for this type of pain are.

This brochure was based on the findings of a panel of medical experts, convened by the NHF to examine the published material on the relationship between caffeine and headache. This panel agreed with published studies that show caffeine, when combined with aspirin and acetaminophen, enhances the pain relieving power of these over-the-counter headache medicines by as much as 40 percent. In addition, the panel reviewed safety data and concluded that caffeine, when used properly, is not addictive and poses no health risk for most people.

Brain tumor . As they grow, brain tumors sometimes cause headache by pushing on the outer layer of nerve tissue that covers the brain or by pressing against pain-sensitive blood vessel walls. Headache resulting from a brain tumor may be periodic or continuous. Typically, it feels like a strong pressure is being applied to the head. The pain is relieved when the tumor is treated by surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
