Hayao Miyazaki is an apparent smoker. In the Bonus track of Spirited Away DVD, Miyazaki is seen seated with a lit cigarette on his left hand whilst sketching on paper with his other.

Since Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were entirely in agreement on what they wanted to do when Miyazaki began to work with Takahata, all went well. Usually, a common image was formed by the two people while discussing the details of a work. Miyazaki would then draw the image on the image board. However, Miyazaki had filled the hand only with drawing the layout of a scene setting in the days of "Heidi, Girl of the Alps", and he had already come to deposit all with Takahata at the time of "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother". Miyazaki became increasingly dissatisfied, which in a way helped raise his independent spirit.

Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" became the first anime to win an Academy Award, winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. This is only the second year for the category, which was won last year by "Shrek."

The first feature film of Miyazaki's career, Castle of Cagliostro puts the lecherous master thief Lupin III in a sticky situation where he mistakenly steals a load of counterfeit bills from a casino. Lupin, being the criminal genius he is, realizes that there's more money in the plates that printed the fake bills.

Miyazaki has illustrated several manga, beginning in 1969 with Puss in Boots (Nagakutsu wo Haita Neko). His major work in this format is the seven-volume manga version of his tale Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which he created from 1982 to 1994 and which has sold millions of copies worldwide.
