Hayao Miyazaki and his contemporaries started this trend of expressionism. The young Japanese animators followed suit and adapted this style of excessive expressionism. As anyone can notice, anime characters have huge eyes which would still have multi-colored highlights. Shadows of characters were painted in a variety of hues, and the hair was likewise done in bright, striking colors.

Miyazaki isn't the only Japanese animator represented on the Disney label. Also new from the company is "The Little Twins," a 13-part series about the adventures of young twins, Petal and Piper, on the magic island of Krockle. Carly Simon wrote and performed the title song for the English-language version, which aired this summer on Nickelodeon. The episodes are available on 60-minute tapes priced at $13 apiece.

It was there that Hayao got his first taste of the anime world, working as an animator on the 1963 feature Watchdog Bow Wow. Two years later, Hayao married fellow animator Akemi Ota, with whom he would eventually have two sons, Goro and Keisuke.
