Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion ride vehicles are called "Doombuggies" (a pun on the word "dunebuggy" that was, admittedly, a lot funnier in the late 1960s). They're black vehicles that are essentially a bench with an attached clamshell-shaped backdrop and a lap bar that closes around you (you can see a photograph of the Doombuggies to the right). Each Doombuggy has three speakers mounted inside the clamshell that provide a running narration through the attraction. Each Doombuggy can seat two adults or three children comfortably. The Doombuggies run on a continuous loop, with loading and unloading accomplished by use of a moving sidewalk.

Throughout the Haunted Mansion ride, there are ghosts that "rise" in the air. It's a looping hologram which can be seen in the graveyard, and near the end as all the ghosts rise from town. You can see Mickey on each and every one. As they start out (small) and rise in the air (getting bigger) for an instance you see a mickey shadow. What turns into they're eyes and mouth, starts as Mickey!

The Haunted Mansion was originally had a plot. The plot was that a sailor built the house for his soon to be wife. But he murdered her. This is obvousily un-disneylike and the plot was killed (No pun intended). But you can still see the props, the weather vein is a ship a top the house, the bride with the glowing heart, and the heads that pop up in the graveyard and attic say "I do" taunting the otherwise would be bride.

The Haunted Mansion opened August 8, 1969, although work on the attraction actually began in 1957. The original concept involved a backstory set in the early 1800s in which the mansion belonged to a wealthy sailing merchant who built the house for his bride. After moving in the new bride discovered that her husband was a bloodthirsty pirate, and upon confronting him with her discovery, he killed her. Her ghost haunted the house and the husband eventually committed suicide. Today the only remaining elements of that story are the sailing ship weathervane on the top of the house, and the bride that haunts the attic.

The Haunted Mansion has been masterfully updated to showcase all of the elements that have long made it such a favorite ride among Disney park-goers. Significant enhancements have been made to the special effects, as well as the audio and lighting. All of the audio narration by the Ghost Host has been re-mastered and a new sound system has been installed in the attraction so now you can hear the Ghost Host in true stereo with multi-positional sound effects. Lighting effects have ... been deftly handled so the parts of the Haunted Mansion ride that had grown dim over the years now provide the frightful visual delights they were always meant to, but without over-brightening the dark ride aspects of the attraction that make riding it so entertaining.. In addition, many mechanical and cosmetic refurbishments have been made both inside and outside the attraction. The Stretching Portrait Gallery provides a more seamless experience of its visual effect and the Doom Buggies now move silently and no longer overwhelm the audio effects.
