Hashish and Marijuana are two psychoactive drugs derived from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. Obtained from the female flowers of the plant, cannabis products are among the most widespread and commonly used illegal drugs. Hashish is created from the resin of flower clusters. Parts of the flowers and the leaves may be included.

Hashish (Kif) is basically processed cannabis (marijuana). It looks like a piece of sticky brown clay. The colors will vary depending on the type and quality of the hashish. Hashish is usually crumbled, mixed with tobacco and then rolled into a joint (cigarette) or smoked in a pipe. You can buy small pipes (sebsis) or water pipes (hookahs) in most markets around Morocco. The pipes will not be displayed openly but venture inside some of the small bazaars and you'll find them.

Hashish contains THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana. It is the sticky resinous material that comes from the cannabis plant. It is collected, dried, and compressed into many forms, including balls, cakes, or cookie-like sheets. Pieces are commonly broken off by users and then smoked, most commonly through pipes. Hashish is most often found in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. By the time hashish reached the United States in the 1990s, the THC content of this drug was only about 5%.

Hashish is distinguished by its high level of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the most active pharmacological ingredient in marijuana. Ordinary marijuana has a THC level of between five and 60 percent, while the concentrated form may have a THC level of as high as 70 percent.

Hashish was always the variety of preference in Europe (although this preference is slowly changing towards the buds of the plant) , and was widely available in North Africa and parts of Asia. It is less less preferred by cannabis users in the US and other producing nations. Hashish is more compact than marijuana, it keeps better, and is easier to smuggle than marijuana. When it has been smuggled by amateurs, it often suffers from longish periods of bad storage, so the quality can vary considerably. Older hashish can easily be recognized as it is hard and has no smell (heating with a lighter is a common test).

Hashish is not legal in the Netherlands, but there are no criminal laws against having a small amount of cannabis (marijuana or hashish), because the Netherlands has decided that having cannibis should not be a crime. Some other countries are starting to "decriminalize" marijuana as well (make using it or having it no longer be a crime).
